A power tool (2) comprises an eccentric platen (24) radially offset from a central drive axis A-A, the degree of eccentricity (e) of which can be varied by a control mechanism (50). A counterbalance mass (26) is arranged to move by an equal and opposite amount to any variance of the eccentricity of the platen in order to maintain static and dynamic balancing of the sander (2).
